Philip Levin Theater
By Friedrich Schiller; translated by Robert David MacDonald
A saint, a martyr, a warrior—Joan is a young country girl clad in armor with her gaze lifted upward, an image seared in the collective memory. But what of the human heart that beats inside the image? Written in 1801, the great Romantic writer Schiller portrays Joan as deeply human; caught between a heavenly destiny she cannot control and the ties that bind her to the earth.
